Maintaining Health and Fitness with ExerciseIf you follow my advice you’re already eating healthy, working out and getting lots of sleep.  If this is your first time reading my blog, then welcome.  There’s a very important thing I’d like to talk about today and that is taking care of your health.  No one enjoys going to the doctor and yet we all know how necessary it is.  Annual checkups, whether it’s the Ophthalmologist, General Physician, OB/GYN, Dermatologist or any other doctor you see on a regular basis, are a key component to your ongoing health and well-being.


Eating right, exercising, weight lifting, cardio, stretching, breathing and sleeping are all important ingredients to good health.  However, having your annual physical is absolutely necessary to keep you healthy.  Checking your blood and other fluids for cholesterol levels, blood sugars, white blood cell counts and more can detect potential problems early on.  Making small changes to your diet or other habits can be an easy solution to an early detected issue. Waiting until something big happens can be a disaster.  You know the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  Well, in this case it’s completely true. Something as simple as a head to toe skin exam by your Dermatologist can uncover pre-cancerous moles, which are easily removed when found early, but can be lethal if left alone, or never detected.

I had a conversation the other day with one of the guys at the gym.  He’s young, he’s in good shape and he seems to have a healthy diet.   One of the TVs was on and it flashed a story about new health care coverage.  The guy turned to me and said “Health insurance, what a waste of money!” I looked at him and said “You know, you won’t think it’s a waste of money when you have to use it.” No matter how well we take care of ourselves, there are other factors at work in our health:  genetics, environmental causes, stress, accidents and more.   The next segment on the TV was about the recent Measles outbreak in California.  You certainly don’t plan to go to Disneyland and come home with a case of the Measles.  I turned to him and said “That’s probably the best argument you can have as to why Heath Insurance is so important.”  He looked at me and walked away. I hope he went to sign up for an insurance plan that day.

Even I, the legendary Mr. America Jason Kozma do enjoy the trappings of a normal person from time to time. Popcorn and soda (diet) at the moives, occasional social indulgences of rich, non-Mr. America approved food at fancy (or not so fancy) restaurants, beer with my friends at Santa Monica Brew, all the stuff regular people do. I just don’t do it daily. Generally you can afford to splurge 1-2 times per week once you have achieved the body condition you want.
